Zebra Print Birthday Cakes

Let me start off by saying, I do make cakes often, but this was my VERY first attempt @ fondant.  Our daughter loves all things zebra, so we went with a hot pink a zebra print theme.  These cakes are your basic store bought box 8" or 9" double layer round cakes.  I then bought Wilton brand prepacked fondant from Wal-Mart (on the wedding aisle).  They are white, so I also bought the Wilton black and pink dye and simply mixed the fondant and dye.  I say simply, but I suggest kneading the fondant and dye in a large ziplock to keep your hands clean.

This picture is as I began on the second cake.  I would suggest starting off with your larger stripes, and then add the smaller ones in after.

I iced the cakes like normal, and rolled out the fondant to about 1/4" thick.  Then rolled the fondant onto the rolling pin, and rolled it back over the cakes.  I then used a pizza cutter to trim the edges.  For the zebra stripes, I rolled out the black fondant and again, used the pizza cutter to free hand stripes.  My fondant started to dry as I was working, so I dipped my index finger in water and rubbed the back side of the black fondant before I placed it in place.  Be careful, though, where you place the dyed fondant, the color will come off, so make sure you place it correctly the first time.

This is what the cake looks like finished from above.

The two cakes finished without toppings.

To make the letters, I also purchased a large box of cookie cutters from Wal-Mart (Wilton brand).  I think it was $10 for 100 shapes. letters and numbers.  I rolled out the pink fondant and punched the letter like playdough and used those for the tops of the cakes. Lastly,  I free handed the 9 with the pizza cutter.
To make it extra girly, we added purple and pink glitter, sparkler candles found at Party City.

The one thing I can say that may make this process quicker and easier, is to buy the Ace of Cakes brand predyed fondant at Party City.  It is much more expensive than dying it and you get less, but definitely easier!

We also found zebra print and pink balloons, plates, cups and napkins at Hobby Lobby.  I alternated the streamer pattern to look more like zebra stripes on the windows.

I hope your hot pink zebra themed party is as much fun as ours was, I think our daughter will remember that one as long as she lives!  She especially loved her "fancy" cake. :) Enjoy!

Hello there!

I wanted to create a place where I could keep track of my projects for my own personal knowledge, and because I am a mommy to 3 and most of the time can't remember how I did something.  :)  So, here we go!  My crafting blog hopefully will help others fill their crafting appetite, give instructions on new projects, and glorify God with my abilities.  He is after all the reason for creativity and THE designer behind it all.  Enjoy!
